Happy New Year!!

Hope everyone had a safe and fun celebration on Monday.  The hubby and I usually stay in, mostly because I hate the cold and am too cheap to pay my way into a bar on New Year's.  This year, we went to downtown Raleigh for First Night (local New Year's celebration).  We actually went twice.  :)

We went first in the afternoon to check out the scene before it got crowded.  We froze our butts off on the Ferris wheel and enjoyed a fried snickers bar - not as tasty as you might think.  We then wrapped up the daytime visit with hot chocolate.  Once again, it was New Year's Eve and all calories consumed got left behind in 2012, or so I choose to think.

The nighttime celebration, however, was insane.  The main street in downtown was blocked off and there were rides, stands, games, circus acts and a concert.  It was cool and fun but way too packed for my taste.  However, Raleigh is amazing in that it also offers crumudgeons like myself less crowded entertainment.  There were many side shows in buildings near the main festivities and the hubby and I enjoyed two, a taste of the opera and a flute choir.  Both were exceptional, free, and warm.  :)

We tried to hang out on the main strip for the countdown, but ended up running screaming towards one of the few bars not charging a cover.  I had a soda (DD!) and french fries as we watched braver souls celebrate on TV.  Perfection.

How about you guys?  Did you do anything fun to ring in the New Year?

Oh yeah, and I did this this weekend:

Pretty in Pink

  1. Raleigh North Carolina? Really? Hey, I know someone else in my state!

  2. Enjoy it while you can. I was just thinking there really are few places where older people can go to hang out, or maybe it's just me. Anyway, I envy you that fried Snickers. (not really)
Hope you have a peaceful year to come.

  3. Like the pink, and admire that you got out to enjoy the day, despite the crowds. In my small village they used to 'drop a goat' (cute little stuffed thing -- not real) from the flag pole, sold goodies and had fireworks. Funny stuff -- our little village is famous for it's yearly goat races, but they stopped the 'drop' and cancelled the celebrations. I hope someday they bring it back.
We watched it on TV, cheered with sparkling berry juice and went to bed early -- boring!

  4. I like your hair! It looks nice! Like you, I also prefer less crowded entertainment. I didn't really do anything exciting this New Year's Eve, though, because I went to visit family for a few days during the Christmas break.

  5. Pretty in pink!

And Happy New Year. I think I may adopt your philosophy of pre-midnight calories consumed being left in the old year. :)

  7. Totally digging the pink! We stayed in with friends last night. They live outside city limits, and so we shot off fireworks in the street. Happy New Year!

  8. I sat at home, alone, sober, in front of a computer screen. Yay. :P

  9. At the stroke of midnight, a stomach virus hit my son and he started spewing. How's that for partying?

  10. Love the pink. Husband and I watched Expendables 2, which is a pretty bad movie. Drinking helps, slightly.

  12. The nighttime celebration sounds fun. The fried snickers does not. :)
